What Gear is Required for Boys Lacrosse?

  • For all 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U & 14U events, full protective gear is required. This entails:
    • Helmet
    • Gloves
    • Arm Pads or Arm Guards
    • Shoulder Pads
    • Shoes: Cleats (Outdoor turf and grass) or Sneakers / Turf Shoes (Box Lacrosse)
    • Protective Cup
    • Mouthguard
    • Stick/Crosse
    • Rib Pads (Optional, recommended for box)
  • For TryLax, only a stick is required:
    • Stick/Crosse
    • Gloves (optional)

Where Can I Acquire Lacrosse Gear?

New lacrosse gear can be purchased from most sporting stores. The two most common in this area are:

  • Lacrosse Unlimited (Vienna or Leesburg)
  • Dicks Sporting Goods

There is also a thriving second hand market for lightly used lacrosse gear.  Some popular resources are:

  • Play It Again Sports (Leesburg or Fredericksburg)
  • Facebook Marketplace

New Chest Protector Rules:

In Fall 2019, the National Association of State High School Federations (NFHS) and US Lacrosse adopted the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) ND200, a new standard for lacrosse chest protection.  This new standard took effect for goalie chest protection January 2021, and will be in effect for all field players starting January 2022.  Compliant equipment will be listed on the Safety Equipment Institute link below and carry the following label:

What Gear Is Required for Girls Lacrosse?

For all girls’ lacrosse practices, clinics, and games, the following equipment is required:

  • Women’s lacrosse stick/crosse
    • The stick must be designed and legally sized for the women’s game.
    • It must measure between 35.5 and 43.25 inches long.
    • The pocket must be shallow enough that the ball remains visible above the sidewalls.
  • Protective eyewear/goggles
    • Eyewear must meet the ASTM F3077 safety standard.
  • Mouthguard
    • The mouthguard must fully cover the teeth.
    • It cannot have protruding tabs.
    • It cannot be clear or white.
  • Cleats or turf shoes
    • Proper footwear is important for traction on slippery turf fields.
  • Large water bottle
    • An insulated water bottle is preferred.

Optional equipment includes:

  • Extra mouthguard
  • Soft-shell helmet
  • Lacrosse ball
  • Athletic bag
